12h Annual Haverford Music Festival

Announcing our headliners for the 12th Annual Haverford Music Festival!

Our nationally renowned headliners will be Brooklyn-based Americana band The National Reserve; founding member of Fairport Convention, Iain Matthews; prog rock revampers Corporal Quorum featuring Wesley Stace (a.k.a. John Wesley Harding) and guitarist Kurt Bloch (band member of The Fastbacks and Young Fresh Fellows), and multi-talented Americana artist Queen Esther.

Our headliners will be supported by many diverse and highly talented performers from throughout the region and beyond on stages behind and in front of the Oakmont School Building at 50 E. Eagle Road (intersection of East Eagle Road & East Hathaway Lane) in Havertown, PA. Area businesses and vendors will fill booths along East Hathaway Lane. There will be food vendors, an Official Beer & Wine Garden hosted by Conshohocken Brewing Co. and City Winery Philadelphia; plus children’s activities – a full day of late-summer fun for the entire family.

Led by singer/guitarist Sean Walsh, the Brooklyn-based Americana combo The National Reserve fuses a wide variety of classic roots traditions into their own strain of rugged, heartfelt rock ‘n roll. A handful of releases supported the band’s early touring, but it was a series of residency gigs at local Brooklyn clubs in 2016 and 2017 that built their reputation as a truly compelling live band. in advance of their breakout album, Motel La Grange, which was released in 2018 by Ramseur Records. The National Reserve is currently working on a new album.

As a founding member and vocalist for Fairport Convention, Iain Matthews helped to change the voice of folk music in the UK. He moved on to create Matthews’ Southern Comfort, exploring his interest in American music; they had a hit single with Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock.” Never one to stand still for very long, Iain worked with another band, Plainsong. Between various Plainsong and Matthews’ Southern Comfort line-ups and especially as a solo artist, he’s made more great albums than we can name (If You Saw Thro’ My Eyes, Tigers Will Survive, Valley Hi, Some Days You Eat the Bear / Some Days the Bear Eats You, and Stealin’ Home – featuring another hit single “Shake It” – are just a few favorites). Today, Iain Matthews lives in the Netherlands and remains a busy recording artist and performer. He will be accompanied at the festival by guitarist Jim Fogarty.

Wesley Stace has been making terrific records since the ‘80s, under both his real name and his former stage name, John Wesley Harding, and he played a great set at 2015’s Haverford Music Festival. But in June of 2018, he was part of a one-off project called Corporal Quorum, a quartet of stellar musicians and like-minded record lovers who also included drummer Patrick Berkery of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, bassist Eddie Carlson of Poi Dog Pondering, and Seattle-based guitarist Kurt Bloch, who, playing with The Split Squad at last year’s Haverford Music Festival, blew everybody away with his dazzling solos. After recording a limited, vinyl-only album of very deep British prog, psych and folk covers and playing a few live dates, Corporal Quorum disappeared – until now! We’re excited to present the band and their unique set of songs done originally by such artists as Procol Harum, Strawbs, Barclay James Harvest, Griffin, Bill Fay, Duncan Browne and Aphrodite’s Child.

Described as “the unknown queen of Americana” (Feedback, Norway) and “a brutal, original, explosive singer” (Vanity Fair, Spain), Queen Esther’s creative output musically is the culmination of several critical Southern elements, not the least of which are years of recording and touring with guitar icon James “Blood” Ulmer. Raised in Atlanta, GA and embedded in Charleston, SC’s Lowcountry, Queen Esther uses her Southern roots to explore American culture and customs. Thanks to a publishing deal with BMG instigated by esteemed singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, Queen Esther started her imprint El Recordings and has released several critically acclaimed albums, including the internationally praised Black Americana project Gild the Black Lily (2021).

The 12th Annual Haverford Music Festival returns returns on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at the intersection of Darby Road and Hathaway Lane in Havertown, PA. There will be over 16 music acts on our stages, plus great food, beer and wine garden, activities for the kids and fun for the entire family!

The festival is now being run by the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit – HTEAMS (Haverford Township Education, Arts & Music Society) – and we’re seeking sponsorships! Become a sponsor and let the residents of Haverford Township, and throughout the region, know you support entertainment, arts and music in our community!
